Bulgarian shepherd dog is of medium to large stature, rich on fur, endurance to all weather conditions, balanced body and fighting spirit. The Bulgarian Shepherd Dog is one of the most ancient breeds on the Balkan Peninsula and in Europe. The formation of the breed is in several stages: with the settlement of the Balkans of the Thracians, Slavs and Bulgarians, came their dogs. These nations came with their own pets, and of course, accompanied by their dogs. The local climate and the encounters with predators have a huge influence on the formation of the Bulgarian Shepherd Dog. This unique breed is a national treasure that we can put next to other Bulgarian breeds farm animals. Before 1944 in every Bulgarian home there was a shepherd dog and it is our duty to keep this national treasure for future generations. In the different regions of Bulgaria this dog is often called, shepherd dog, Karakachan dog or Bulgarian Goran. All these names describe the same dog! Are there any differences between the Bulgarian Shepherd Dog and the Karakachan Dog? No, there are no differences. It is the same dog, with the same ancestors, as long as there is no deforestation. Domesticated dogs are not of interest from a breeding point of view and their breeding is pointless. MABOK encourages only the breeding of purebred Bulgarian Shepherd Dogs!
